What’s Going On is full-length dance piece set to the ground-breaking music of Marvin Gaye. Taking inspiration from 1971’s inimitable title song, "What’s Going On," this work looks into the past to find a reflection of the world today. Marvin Gaye’s insights into life, love, and social justice are given fresh perspectives with choreography by Vincent Thomas, Ralph Glenmore and Sylvia Soumah. It provokes thoughtfulness and sparks conversations which ignite change in each community it touches.
Part of what makes this performance so special is the programming that surrounds it. There will be Masterclasses taught by Vincent Thomas at four locations in the Boston area, connecting disparate, often siloed, areas of the dance community. From these classes Vincent will choose 8-10 dancers to perform in paid positions as “Community Dancers” alongside the professional company. This will connect dancers from throughout the city who may rarely have opportunities to collaborate.
This project is presented by Anmol Mehra with our primary nonprofit partners: Urbanity Dance and the Neighborhood Network Center, Inc. (Boston, MA). Major underwriters include Plymouth Rock Foundation, the JAKT Fund, and corporate sponsor UHM Properties.
